Plassmeyer Pacifies Islander Bats

Islanders shutout by Mizzou

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Michael Plassmeyer fired six innings of one-hit, shutout baseball as Missouri's staff combined to toss the first 1-hit shutout in Kleberg Bank College Classic history in its 9-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night.

The left-handed Plassmeyer (2-0) dominated the Islander bats, fanning eight in his stellar six innings of work. The lone blemish on his line came on a 14-pitch at-bat against Dan Brokop, who singled to left field for the Islanders' only hit of the night.

After Plassmeyer, four Tigers (6-1) combined to finish the one-hit shutout.

Mizzou took a lead in in the second inning, scoring a run when Alex Samples doubled into the left field corner. The Tigers would extend the advantage the next frame, scoring four runs on six hits. Brett Bond drove home a pair with a double to highlight the frame for the Tigers.

Jackson Owens prevented the inning from continuing by cutting down Robbie Glendinning at the plate on a perfect strike to catcher Scott Balfantz.

Unable to get anything going at the plate, the Islanders had just two baserunners all night. One was Brokop on his sixth-inning single. The other came in the bottom of the first when Nick Anderson reached on catcher's interference.

Chris Cooper (0-1) took the loss for Corpus Christi. The right-hander allowed five runs, all earned, on 10 hits in five innings. Chad Romere was tagged for the other four Mizzou runs in two innings of relief work.

Carter Lilly retired two batters, but walked three before Cullen Jozwiak retired the final batter in the top of the ninth.

The Islanders return to action at Whataburger Field Sunday afternoon in a 3 p.m. first pitch against Houston.
