WACO, Texas – Tashonna Williams and Hannah McWilliams broke school records as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field teams competed at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco Saturday.

Williams broke a record in the 400 meters that has been held since 2004. Her time of 55.54 seconds topped the previous best – set by Kenyta Mathews – of 55.94 seconds. Williams placed sixth in the event.
McWilliams continues to top the pole vault mark on the Island, recording a height of 3.80 meters to place ninth at Baylor.
Kaelin Simmons nearly broke her own school record in the hammer throw, which she set in San Antonio earlier this season. She placed ninth on Saturday with a throw of 47.44 meters, just half a meter off her record.
Sashane Hanson technically placed second in the high jump after losing a jump-off, but the freshman tied for first with a mark of 1.72 meters on Saturday. Liz Romo added a personal best in the 5,000 meters, running 17:59.46 to place 10th.
On the men's side, both relays performed well. The 4x100 team of David Carrillo, Angelo Garland, Brandon Walls and Javier Reyes took seventh with a time of 42.22 seconds, while the 4x400 squad of Carrillo, Garland, Reyes and Will Maraggia placed 11th in 3:12.63.
Garland and Carrillo finished the 400 meters in 15th and 20th, crossing the line in 47.59 and 48.63 seconds, respectively. Maraggia was 13th in the 800 at 1:51.79 and Vinnie Van Puyvelde took 11th in the 5,000 with a time of 15:20.15.
The Islanders will return to action May 6-8 when they host the Southland Conference Championships at the Dugan Family Track & Field Stadium.
