Baar Improves in 5,000 at Mt. SAC Relays

NORWALK, Calif. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior Philipp Baar competed in the 5,000 meters at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays late Friday night in Norwalk, Calif.  He set a new personal best with a time of 14:13.11.

Baar placed 17th out of a total of 82 competitors in the event at Cerritos College's Falcon Stadium. He defeated the two Southland Conference opponents in the race.  Stephen F. Austin's Charles Mathenge took 27th, while Lamar's Alex Dunbar was 35th.

"He ran a strong race until the final 300 meters," Director of Track & Field Shawn Flanagan said. "He's a little disappointed because he worked hard to get in position to break 14:10, but he ran a lifetime best so we can not complain."

His time of 14:13.11 is one of the top 10 fastest ran by an Islander, and only two in the Blue and Green have run faster than Baar. Two-time national champion Shadrack Songok's school record is 13:46.30 and Patrick Kimeli ran 14:09.71 at the Mt. SAC Relays back in 2011.

The rest of the Islanders squad will compete Saturday at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston.
