GAME 1, LOSS, 5-0
Liz Carter (7-11, 3.36 ERA) entered the circle in the series opener looking to snap a streak of three games without a win. Despite strong pitching to start the game, the Austin native fell victim to an unfortunate bounce in the second.
Shortstop Jessica Mendez made an excellent diving stop to keep a Brittany Rodriguez base hit from reaching the outfield. In an attempt to get the lead runner out, the Corpus Christi native's flip to third missed its mark and allowed the Cardinals to plate a pair of runs.
Carter buckled down until the sixth when Ashley McDowell sent a two-run shot over the fence in right as the hosts extended the lead to 5-0. Carter finished her 14th complete game of the season with four earned runs against after scattering five hits. The junior fanned eight, her highest total since facing Central Arkansas on March 13.
A&M-Corpus Christi matched Lamar in the hits column with five. The Blue and Green were led offensively by Dani Tefft's eighth multi-hit game of the year. Mendez, Adriana Farris and Megan Mitchel each added a hit.
Lamar pitcher Ciara Luna tossed a five-hit shutout with one walk and four punchouts. McDowell paced Lamar with a pair of RBI, while four other Cardinals tallied a hit in the win.
GAME 2, LOSS, 5-0
Second game starter Stephanie Flores (1-7, 2.96 ERA) looked strong through the opening three innings. The Mercedes native recorded all four of her strikeouts during her first time through the lineup.
Things got dicey for the senior in the fourth, as McDowell picked up her third RBI of the day with a base hit to right. Lamar tacked on a pair of runs when Sarah Ragsdale singled to right. The Cardinals added a run in the fifth and six on a wild pitch and a double steal, respectively.
In a similar fashion to the opening game, the Islanders found their offensive opportunities limited by Lamar's pitching and defense. Mackinzee Griebel led the way for the Blue and Green with a pair of hits, while Cosette Hernandez, Carter and Tefft chipped in with a base knock.
Flores went the distance, scattering five hits and allowing five earned runs with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Aime Cisneros earned the win with six innings of work, before Lauren Dannelley came on to surrender a single hit in the seventh.
