Islanders Men's and Women's Track and Field Honored For Academic Achievements By USTFCCCA
Corpus Christi, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams received All-Academic recognition from the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2014-2015 season. This marks the second time in school history and the second straight year that both men's and women's programs have earned All-Academic Team honors.
Teams must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.00 or higher for the entire school year to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. The Island University was the only Southland Conference program to receive recognition for both their men's and women's programs.
The Islanders men's track and field team recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.27, making them one of the 123 Division I men's programs to achieve All-Academic Team honors, and joining Lamar University as the only men's teams from the Southland Conference to make the list.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's track and field team posted a 3.18 GPA for the 2014-2015 school year. A total of 224 Division I women's programs received All-Academic Team laurels. The Islander women were joined by Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese State and Sam Houston as schools that represented the Southland Conference on the list.
The recognition from the USTFCCCA added to the academic accolades for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi student-athletes. Last month, eight Islanders were named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Cross Country and Track & Field teams. Philipp Baar, Jackson Davis, Valentinas Rudys, Edgar Martinez, Jasmine McCoy, Shanice Prendergast, Kerissa Wiley and Melina Ortiz earned conference commendation for their work in the classroom.
The Islanders also had 33 members of the track and field teams make the Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll for the spring semester. 15 men and 18 women achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher to receive the conference academic honors. From the 33 who received recognition, eight student-athletes posted 4.0 GPA for the semester - Rudys, Davis, David Carrillo and Christoph Hintz for the men, and Prendergast, Brandi Huff, Shelby Polasek and Regina Salinas on the women's side.
