HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team scored two runs in the top
of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as the team dropped the series opener to Sam Houston State, 3-2, Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
Kyle Danford led the way for the Islanders with a 2-for-4 performance including driving in the only runs of the day for the Islanders. Sophomore Brandon Guilford went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
The Bearkats (25-22, 14-8 SLC) picked up runs in both the first and second, cruising through the game behind a superb outing by starting pitcher Andrew Godail. Godail finished the night going seven and two-third innings allowing only four hits and striking out ten on his way to his third win of the year.
Guilford sparked the Islanders (20-22, 10-12 SLC) offense in the eighth after leading off with a single out to right field. He showed his speed on the bases in the next at bat, tagging up and moving into scoring position on a flyout to right field.
Jordan Lee battled to a full count in the next at bat, eventually drawing the walk. Both Guilford and Lee moved to second and third on a groundout.
Danford, a Bryan, Texas native drilled a ball out to center to score both runners and cut the lead to just one.
That would be all the offense the Islanders would be able to put together as Alex Bisacca closed out the game for the Bearkats.
Senior right-hander Matt Danton (3-6) took the loss for the Islanders, going six and a third innings giving up all three runs. The Conroe, Texas product struck out three and walked two Bearkats on the night. Jacob Dorris pitch in relief, going one and two-third innings and striking out four.
The Islanders and Bearkats will continue play Saturday at 3 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium. Trevor Belicek, who leads the nation in strikeouts per game (13.15) is slated to take the mound.
