HOUSTON - Five Islanders recorded top-5 finished after day one of the Bayou Classic hosted by Rice University. The Islanders sit in sixth place after day one of competition with 11 total points. Southland Conference for Incarnate Word leads the competition with 29 points.
Senior Valentinas Rudys led the way for the Islanders on day one. The Vilnius, Lithuania native posted the only win of the day in the 1500-meter race. He was able to beat out Elliott Farris, finishing a second ahead with a time of 3:55.23. Steven Galli ran a personal-best as he took fourth in the event behind Rudys with a time of 3:59.25
Liz Romo recorded the highest individual finish on the women's side for the Islanders. Romo, a freshman from Del Rio, Texas finished third in the 10,000 meter event in a time of 38:29.00. Vanessa Galindo finished just behind Romo at fourth with a time of 38:42.60.
Long Branch, N.J. native Jasmine McCoy also put together a solid day on the track with a fourth-place finish in the women's 1500. She finished the event in 4:47.95 while freshman Taylor Hawes took eighth in the race with a time of 4:51.95
Daniel Guerrero (15:11.28) finished ninth in the men's 5000 while Regina Salinas (18:44.36) and Alexandria Rossi (18:45.34) took ninth and tenth in the women's race, respectively.
The Islanders head to San Antonio on Saturday for the UTSA Invitational.
