Baseball defeats Lamar, 12-3; Malone picks up 200th career win

BEAUMONT, Texas - Head coach Scott Malone recorded his 200th career win as the Texas A&M- Corpus Christi baseball team cruised to a 12-3 win over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium Friday night.

The Islanders opened the game scoring the first five runs after being shutout in the series opener on Thursday. The team continued to the scoring barrage throughout the game, adding seven more runs, outhitting the Cardinals, 13-to-7 on the night.

Senior left-hander Trevor Belicek came out with another strong performance against Lamar. The Uvalde, Texas native went seven complete innings and struck out 11 Cardinals as he cruised to his team-leading fourth win of the year.

The Islanders (13-13, 4-7 SLC) started the game with three-straight hits. Outfielder Tyler Ware led off with a standup triple to right center. Casey Thomas would score Ware from third in the next at bat after he sent a ball through the middle of the infield. Right fielder Kyle Danford would pick up an RBI later in the inning as he grounded out.

Lamar would not slow down the visitors in the second inning either, as the Islanders added on three more runs. Lukas Hermanson would begin the inning with one of his three walks before Frankie Salas reached on an error. Junior transfer Cody Clarke sent a ball deep to left center for a triple that would score two. Ware picked up an RBI groundout to finish the scoring rally.

The Cardinals (14-16, 4-7 SLC) would answer in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run from Kevin Santana.

The scoring continued all the way to the end of the game for the Islanders, as the Lamar bullpen had no answer for the AMCC bats. In all, LU used six pitchers on the night. Danny Fernandez took the loss for Lamar after allowing five runs in the first two innings.

Kevin Landgrebe and Dalton D'Spain finished the game for the Islanders on the mound. Both relievers had strong showings on the night, striking out one batter in an inning of work each.
