Islanders Shutout By Lamar, 3-0

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar's Chase Angelle tossed seven and two-third innings of scoreless baseball as the Lamar Cardinals shutout the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team for only the second time this year in a 3-0 victory at Vincent-Beck Stadium Thursday night.

Angelle, a redshirt senior, allowed only five hits in his outing on the way to his fourth win of the year. The lefty struck out five and walked just one on the night.

The Cardinals (14-15, 4-6 SLC) didn't waste any time getting on the board as they struck for two runs in the second inning of the game. The scoring rally started with back-to-back singles by LU's Kevin Markum and Kyle Santana. With one out in the frame, outfielder Brenden Satran was able to lay down a bunt for a base hit as the Islanders defense had no play on the ball.

The Cardinals would score on the next play as Matt Salazar reached on an error. LU added on one more run in the inning on a groundout, making it 2-0.

The Islanders bats woke up briefly in the eighth as they struck for two hits and put runners at second and third with two outs. That would spell the end of the day for LU's starter as they brought in the closer, Derek Wade for the two-inning save.

The Cardinals used the wind at Vincent-Beck Stadium to their advantage, picking up several base hits through the infield gaps.

Senior Matt Danton, who leads the Southland Conference in ERA, took the loss for the Islanders and fell to 2-5 on the year. Danton retired six Cardinals with strikeouts and walked just two.

Zacarias Hardy led the way for the Islanders (12-13, 3-7 SLC) with two hits in three at bats. The sophomore sparked the offense with a leadoff single in the eighth, but was stranded at third. Tyler Ware was the only other Islander to pick up multiple hits on the night. The senior finished 2-for-4. Casey Thomas picked up the only ther hit for the visitors as he slashed a ball through the left side of the infield in the eighth.

The team will continue its three-game series with Lamar Friday at 6 p.m.
