Stephen F. Austin bats overpower Islanders, 7-2

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team dropped its sixth consecutive
game after falling to the visiting Lumberjacks, 7-2, in the series opener Friday night at Chapman Field.

The Islanders (10-11, 2-5 SLC) were outhit for the ninth time this year after Stephen F. Austin notched 10 hits on the night compared to AMCC's five.

Senior right-hander Matt Danton (2-4) went five and two-third innings for the Islanders, giving up five hits and two earned runs in the outing. The Conroe, Texas native struck out six Lumberjacks and walked four as he took the loss for the home team.

Tyler Ware was the only Islander to collect multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jordan Lee, Dawson Yates and Lukas Hermanson added a hit apiece.

SFA's Cameron Gann picked up his third win of the year after a six and a third inning outing. The right-hander sat down six Islanders via the strikeout and six-straight batters in the second and third inning.

The Lumberjacks (8-18, 3-6 SLC) struck first with a lone run in the third inning, after the nine-hole hitter Eric DeJesus reached on a fielding error and later came around to score.

A&M-Corpus Christi answered quickly in the next inning, plating two to take the lead. Yates, a sophomore, led off the inning with a single to left field. In the next at bat, Hermanson blooped a ball to right to put runners on first and second.

Lee would then reach on a fielders choice before junior shortstop Casey Thomas recorded a sac fly to plate Yates from third. Left-hander Tyler Ware recorded his third triple of the year in the next at bat to clear the bases and give the Islanders the 2-1 advantage.

SFA would send around the tying run in the top of the fourth. They would continue to chip away at Danton and add one more run in the sixth to his day.

The Islanders used four pitchers out of the bullpen, and SFA would continue to test them throughout the night. Of the Lumberjack's 10 hits, five came against the Islanders bullpen in three and a third innings.

Stephen F. Austin added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including stealing home.

The Islanders had their chances though, but were unable to come up with a base hit when runners were on base, stranding seven on the night.

The team will continue its series with Stephen F. Austin Saturday in the annual Strikeout Cancer game at Chapman Field. Senior southpaw Trevor Belicek is scheduled to take the mound with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
