Baseball Shuts Out Nicholls for Doubleheader Sweep

BOX SCORES

THIBODAUX, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team made history Saturday, as both Matt Danton and Trevor Belicek each claimed their 16th career wins as the Islanders picked up the doubleheader sweep of Nicholls, improving to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the Southland Conference.

Prior to today's action both Nicholls and the Islanders were the two best pitching teams in the Southland Conference. The Islanders showed just how good they are, as the Danton, Belicek and redshirt sophomore Nolan Holland combined for 18 innings of shutout baseball.

GAME ONE: Islanders 7, Colonels 0
A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls showed why they lead the league on the mound as both Danton and the Colonels' Marc Frazier both did not allow much offense through the first five innings.

The Islanders would get the best of Frazier in the end though, striking for three runs in the sixth inning and forcing the right-hander out of the ball game.

Senior Kyle Danford did what he does best in the sixth, driving a ball to deep center field for a two-run double. In the next at bat, Frankie Salas hit for a double and scored Danford. Salas was thrown out attempting to stretch it to a triple.

A&M-Corpus Christi would later extend their lead in the eighth as Colonels' reliever Cole Stapler was lit up for four runs. With the bases loaded, Stapler issued one of his two walks of the inning as Danford picked up his third RBI of the game. The Islanders would tack on three more in the inning.

Danton tossed a complete game shutout to pick up his second win of the year. The senior struck out nine Colonels while walking only two batters.

GAME TWO: Islanders 4, Colonels 0
The Islanders picked up two unearned runs in the opening frame and never looked back. The Colonels committed a season-high four errors in the contest as the Islanders steadily retired the Colonels one-by-one.

A combined shutout of Nicholls was the story of the game as Belicek went seven strong innings while Holland tossed two scoreless, striking out four. Belicek struck out 12 batters for the fourth time in his career Saturday. The Uvalde, Texas native allowed just one hit during the start and walked just one as he improved to 2-1 on the season.

The Islanders strung together three hits in the seventh to add two runs to their total. Sophomore third baseman Dawson Yates led things off for the Islanders with a double down to left field before Casey Thomas singled to center, scoring Yates. Lee went on to single to right field, advancing Lee to third. Lee would score from third on a throwing error to make it 4-0.

The team will be back in action Sunday when they go for the series sweep of the Colonels at 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Garrett Harris will get the start for the Islanders while Nicholls' Justin Sinibaldi is slated to take the mound for the home squad.
