COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams started right where they left off at the Texas A&M
Invitational. After breaking eight school records in the indoor season opener last weekend, the team broke four all-time school records, while posting top-10 numbers 19 different times during the Invitational.
The A&M-Corpus Christi women finished fourth out of the field of 13 while the men took 10th in the squads first scored event of the year.
"We are continuing the good start from last week," said head coach Shawn Flanagan. "We had some great performances today."
Juniors Ebony Collins and Shelby Polasek brought home the Islanders two event titles on the track. Collins, a San Antonio, Texas native put her name at the top of the Islanders record book in the 200-meter dash, finishing first in the event with a time of 24.65. A Reno, Nevada native, Polosek took home to 5000-meter title, finishing the race in 18:45.16 while Carissa Piñón (19:23.97) finished third, respectively.
Senior thrower Brandi Huff now sits at the top of the Islanders' all-time list after her second-place finish in the shot put, finishing the event with a 13.77m (45-02.25) throw. Another standout in the field events was Kerissa Wiley. The junior jumper tied the all-time record she set last week, finishing the high jump event with a score of 1.67m (5-05.75) which was good enough for third-place.
On the men's side, Angelo Garland took second-place in the 400-meter event, breaking the program record that he set last season. The sophomore finished with a time of 48.44. Valentinas Rudys (1:55.21) took third in the 800-meter event while freshman Kemar Mowatt continues to impress, writing his name in the Islanders' history book several times with his finishes in the 60-meter hurdles.
Both distance medley teams finished the Invitational with second-place finishes, with the men finishing in 10:22.68 and the women crossing the line in 12:51.11.
