Track & Field Sets Pair of School Records in Texas Challenge

FULL RESULTS

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi track and field teams faced some tough competition on Saturday at the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational, helping the Islanders push themselves to two school records and numerous personal records.

"We did some really good things today, and I was happy with the way we competed against some of the best teams in the nation," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "This meet was about our student-athletes lining up against quality opponents and going out there and competing no matter the name across the other teams' jerseys.

"Furthermore, UTSA did a great job of putting on a terrific meet with their new world-class facilities and it was a very pleasant experience."

One of the best performances in Saturday's action for the Islanders was the 4x400 relay, as three freshmen and a junior combined to run the race in 3:12.92 en route to a fourth-place finish. The group of Jackson Davis, Andres Salazar, Angelo Garland and lone upperclassman David Carrillo also put themselves atop the Islanders record book with their performance.

The only competitor for A&M – Corpus Christi to participate in both days of the meet was Isabella Baptiste, as she had a great start on Friday in the heptathlon with the second-best score heading into Saturday's events.

She ended up finishing in third place with a personal record 4322 points, while also picking up PRs in six of the seven total events. Baptiste finished second in three of the events while also coming in first in the long jump with a leap of 5.06m (16' 7¼"). Her point total also was the second-best in Islander history.

Someone who was able to set a new school record for the Islanders was Omesha Locke, as she finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 41.61m (136' 6").

Fellow throwers Adrienne Nickleson and Kaelin Simmons also posted solid finishes with their tosses in the shot put. Nickleson came in fourth with her throw of 13.77m (45' 2¼"), while Simmons was right behind her in fifth with a mark of 12.77m (41' 10¾").

On the track, Philipp Baar came away with the best performance by an Islander, as he finished fourth in the 1500m with a time of 3:50.23, which was just a half of a second off of his personal record.

On the women's side in the 1500m, Regina Salinas set her PR for the second consecutive week, as she came in seventh in the event, clocking a 4:37.34.

Joining her with seventh-place finishes on the day were Jasmine Boutte who had a strong open to her season in the 800m with a time of 2:15.82, while Ashley Rosebrough was the other, finishing in 11.98 in the 100m.

Another personal record was set by Ebony Collins, as she finished eighth in the 400m, making her lap around the track in 58.40.

The Islanders will be right back in action against some of the best competition in the nation, as some of the squad will travel to the Texas Relays on March 26-29, while others will go to the Rice Bayou Classic on March 28-29.
