HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi track and field teams capped off a successful regular season in the indoor portion of the schedule at the Houston Tune Up on Saturday.
"I think we are where we need to be after this tune up race," assistant coach Hickel Woolery said. "Everyone is starting to peak at the right moment, and I was very pleased with how we ran today. We are just focused on getting better heading into the Southland Conference Championships, and I think we did that today."
Once again, there were numerous personal records set on the day, with the lone first-place finish coming out of Cordarius Edmonson, who finished atop the competitors in the 800m with a time of 1:57.97, which is the 12th-best this season in the Southland.
David Carrillo and Angelo Garland each had solid showings in both the 200m and the 400m. Carillo ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 400m with a time of 49.66 to finish sixth, which also puts him in the sixth slot in the conference. He finished a place higher at fifth in the 200m, clocking a 22.76.
Garland finished just behind him in both races, setting a personal record in the 200m, finishing sixth with a time of 22.93, while he came in seventh in his strongest race with a time of 49.86 in the 400m.
For the field events it was Kerrisa Wiley who had a big day, as she broke the school record in the high jump, clearing 1.65m (5' 5") to finish fourth in the event and put her into sixth on the Southland standings.
In the men's high jump both Dallas Owen and Skyler Coffman cleared 1.85m (6' 0¾") to finish in sixth.
It was a terrific outing for the women's shot put throwers, as Vivian Rodriguez, Adrienne Nickleson, Kaelin Simmons and Omesha Locke all finished in a row in the 9-12 slots, respectively. All of the throwers set new personal records for themselves, while Rodriguez broke her own school record in doing so with a heave of 12.36m (40' 6¾").
Back on the track, two of the other top finishers on the day for the Islanders were Edgar Martinez and Ann-Kathrin Ott who both finished sixth in the mile. Martinez did so with a time of 4:25.05, while Ott clocked in at 5:18.10, putting them both in the top 20 in the conference.
A few student-athletes will have one more chance to prepare for the Southland Indoor Championships, as several distance runners will compete in the 3000m on Saturday at the McNeese Invitational. The event is scheduled to be the second to last running event, as the first race will start at 2 p.m. with all running events set on a rolling schedule.
