Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI – John Jordan and Bryce Douvier each scored 18 points as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team defeated Our Lady of the Lake 73-58 in the season opener for both teams.
The Islanders were in command for most of the contest, leading by double digits for the final 22:16 of the game. Brandon Pye and Jelani Currie each finished with 10 points to give A&M-Corpus Christi four players in double figures. Douvier led the Islanders with eight rebounds as well.
Daniel Skinner and Darion Brown each scored 10 points to lead OLLU, with Skinner missing a double-double by a single rebound. The Islanders won the battle of the boards in the contest, 37-32.
The Islanders jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on the strength of a pair of Pye jumpers and a Douvier layup. From there, the teams went back-and-forth to a 13-9 advantage for the home squad. At that point, OLLU went on a 10-2 run to gain their largest lead of the game at 19-15 with 7:59 left in the half.
After trading baskets to get the score to 20-17, the Islanders locked down defensively, holding the Saints without a field goal for a span of 4:19 to put together a 14-5 run and take a six-point lead. The home squad continued its strong defense all the way to the half, pushing the lead to 41-29 on the strength of 12 points from Douvier in the stanza.
Following the break, the two teams traded baskets, with the Saints cutting it to 10 on a Brown layup. But the Islanders came out with six straight points – four on Douvier layups – to move the advantage back to 16 at 51-35. The Islanders pushed it to a game-high 17 on another Douvier layup, this one at 12:25 that put the lead at 55-38.
The visitors cut the lead to 12 on a Terence Berry three-ball at the 6:02 mark, but that was as close as the Saints would get. A Pye jumper was followed by four straight Jordan free throws, as the duo combined to score the Islanders' final 16 points of the game.
A&M-Corpus Christi now hits the road for the next three games, beginning with a contest at Georgetown on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The game, which tips off at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 2 with Scott Graham and Donny Marshall on the call.
