CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi basketball programs, along with the cheer and dance squads and pep band, kicked off the 2014-15 season in front of over 700 fans Thursday night at Islanders Invasion in the Dugan Wellness Center. The event was presented by Domino's Pizza.
The evening opened with a performance from the Islanders cheer and dance teams. Then, the women's and men's basketball teams were announced and head women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick and head men's coach Willis Wilson addressed the crowd.
The main event started with the three-point contest. Four student-athletes were paired up with four students from the crowd. Shay Weaver and her teammate competed against Brandon Pye and his teammate in the finals with Pye's squad winning the contest.
The Invasion continued with the women's basketball team showing off their dance moves while the men's team entertained the crowd with dance moves of their own.
Next was a slam-dunk contest, judged by President Flavius Killebrew, Doug Kesterson form ESPN1440, former men's basketball player Seth Engelken and guest student judge Reno Puente.
Bryce Douvier, Rashawn Thomas, Joe Kilgore, Jelani Currie and defending champion John Jordan competed in the event. Kilgore and Jordan advanced to the finals with Jordan defending his title with a score of 40-16 to complete his four-peat.
