Three Men's Runners Set School Records In Texas A&M Invitational

COMPLETE RESULTS

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's teams set three school records and numerous personal bests on their way to a successful day at the Texas A&M Invitational in the Gilliam Indoor Track on Friday.

"The student-athletes improved today, so on that basis life is good," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Overall, it's a track meet. We had some student-athletes that did really well and some that struggled, but as a group we did a lot more things good than not so good, so I'm pleased. We just have to pick up in some of the areas where we are a little off and just get after it."

Each of the school records were set on the men's side, as the fast banked track at the complex helped three individuals set the 200m, 400m and 800m school records. Setting the 200m was David Carrillo, who came in eighth in the race with a time of 22.25.

However, Carrillo saw his school record of 49.86 in the 400m fall, as freshman Angelo Garland ran that particular race in 48.99 en route to a fifth-place finish.

The runner who finished highest overall out of the three was Valentinas Rudys, who ran the fastest indoor time in the 800m by an Islander since Luis Garcia ran a 1:53.86 on Feb. 17, 2007. Rudys edged out that time with a 1:53.53 to finish third in the event.

After winning the race last week in Houston, the men's distance medley relay team retained its title, as it bested its time from the opener by more than seven seconds to finish first with a time of 10:20.55.

Falling just short of first was Paul Hansel, who ran the mile in 4:17.22 — less than half a second slower than his person record — to come in second.

Rounding out the strong day on the men's side of things was Philipp Baar who set a personal record by more than 11 seconds in the 3000m, running an 8:23.24 to result in him being the fourth finisher across the line.

The top finisher on the women's side from an overall finish standpoint was Jasmine Boutte, as she picked up a fourth-place finish in the 800m, coming up four tenths of a second shy of her personal record, running a 2:16.96 in the event. Also with a strong race in the event was Sidney Siepert, who finished seventh with a time of 2:19.20. That mark gave her the fifth-best time in Islander history.

A trio of Islander women placed fifth in their respective events, as Ebony Collins did so in the 60m (7.81), while Ann-Kathrin Ott was the fifth finisher across in the mile (5:12.75). Rounding out the fifth-place finishes was Cecilia Jones, who did so in the 3000m by shaving nine seconds off her personal record with a time of 10:10.95.

Also setting a personal record in the 3000m was Regina Salinas, who ran it in a 10:26.46, while Lara Huelsebusch rounded out the top 10 in the event with a 10:29.72.

The best field finish of the day for A&M – Corpus Christi went to Kerrisa Wiley, as she bettered her jump from last week to record the second-best high jump clearance in Islander history with a height of 1.58m (5'-022/3") to finish seventh in the event.

The meet did keep a team score on the day, as the women finished eighth out of 11 teams with 31 points. The men's team scored more points with 34, but finished one place lower at ninth out of 12 teams.

After just a six-day break between the first two meets, the teams will now have two weeks off before they head back to Houston to compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational on Jan. 31.
