CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2013 indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas. The Islanders will begin competition against 30 other schools at the TTU Athletic Training Center.
"We are just feeling things out as we have not had practice in four weeks," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "It will be a bit of a workout and see where we are at. We have some student-athletes with injuries but we will work through them during the indoor season. It is a low key meet which is what we want at this time of year."
Last season in Lubbock, Ashley Rosebrough finished in third place in the 200m clocking a time of 24.84 while Sidney Siepert finished with a time 27.01 and Courtney Padron recorded a time of 28.13. In the 55m finals, Rosebrough finished in 14th place with a time of 7.24. In the 400m, Siepert led the Islanders, followed by Padron.
On the men's side, David Carrillo was the top Islander to finish in the 200m in 18th place with a time of 22.63 while William Scott clocked a time of 23.35. In the 55m, Carrillo finished with a time of 6.74 for fourth place in the books and Scott rounded out the Islanders in 40th with a time of 6.94. In the 400m, Carrillo clocked a time of 50.83 and Scott followed with a time of 50.97. Roger De La Cruz rounded out the Islanders with a time of 52.05.
Top returner De La Cruz, who advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary Round last season in the high jump finished fourth at the open. He cleared 2.04m (6-08.25) while Quincy Obeng finished in seventh with a clearance of 1.89m (6-02.25).
In the 4 x 400m men's relay, the Islanders placed 11th with a time of 3:23.25 to place third in the Islanders top 10 records.
Along with Flanagan, the Islanders will be under the direction of assistant coach and former Texas A&M - Corpus Christi All-American Hickel Woolery and graduate assistant Cody Knight.
Joining De La Cruz as a top returner is
Patrick Kimeli (1500m, 5000m) who advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds last season. Saturday's meet will debut newcomers
Tim Price (Corpus Christi/Kingsville),
Shanice Prendergast (Brampton, ON/Heart Lake SS),
Ebony Collins (San Antonio/Randolph HS) and
Bryce Johnston (Gunnison, Colo./Texas State). The meet will also be the first for newcomers
Paola Perez (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff HS),
Ashley Mills (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS),
Abel Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya/UTEP),
Alexandra Fernandez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS)
Kim Ward (Corpus Christi/Moody HS),
Regina Salinas (Corpus Christi/Incarnate Word) and
Samantha Hardin (Montgomery/ Montgomery HS), who all competed on the Islanders Cross Country teams. The Islanders shattered seven school records combined during the indoor season last year.
Both teams will be in action next Friday, Jan. 18, in Lake Charles, La. at McNeese State.
