SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's 4x100 meter relay team broke the school record and both the men's and women's teams put together another successful day at the Texas State Invitational at Texas State University Track and Field Stadium.
"We ran really hard today and I think the times showed it," head coach Randy Bungard said. "We had three girls qualify in the 100m and we broke the school record in the 4x100."
Shakelia Coleman, Kassandrea Son, Ernestine Cray and Brianeka Harris teamed up in the 4x100 and ran a record-breaking time of 46.15 to win the event.
Brandi Huff won the women's javelin with a mark of 40.79m (133-10) to place third in the record books. The Islanders placed three in the top 10 of the 100m and cleared the qualifying marks for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. Coleman finished in second place with a time of 11.84 to place second in the Islanders records and Son clocked a time of 11.92 to finish fourth. Son holds the school record with a time of 11.64, set back in 2008. Cray placed eighth with a time of 12.16 and Harris marked a time of 12.49.
Sidney Siepert qualified for the outdoor championships with a time of 2:18.93 in the 800m and Felisha Salinas also qualified for the championships with a time of 1:05.61 in the 400m hurdles. Courtney Padron finished with a time of 1:06.42 in the 400m hurdles.
Shannon Girdy crossed the line with a time of 59.55 in the 400m and teamed up with Siepert, Son and Harris in the 4x400 meter relay. The four clocked a time of 3:53.99 to place seventh and move into fifth place in the Islanders records.
Harris joined Jontavia Dailey in the triple jump. Harris marked a distance of 10.91m (35-09.50) and Dailey finished with a mark of 10.65m (34-11.25). Huff and Roberson competed in the shot put. Huff placed sixth with a throw of 13.27m (43-06.50) and Roberson marked a distance of 11.77m (38-07.50).
The 400m highlighted the men's events. Cordarius Edmondson, Matt Youngblood and David Carrillo all clocked season-best times. Edmondson led the way with a time of 48.60 to place eighth and Youngblood finished in 10th with a time of 49.07, while Carrillo placed right behind Youngblood with a time of 49.46. Edmondson's time passes the qualifying standard and places third in the Islanders records.
William Scott picked up a fifth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. His time of 53.96 also passes the qualifying mark and is good for third place in the Islanders records. Dallas Crain clocked a season-best time of 22.11 in the 200m and teamed with Youngblood, Carrillo and Edmondson in the 4x100 meter relay to place fifth with a time of 42.46.
"Dallas is coming off an injury and is making good progress," Bungard said. "I'm proud of how he's running and how he's been moving forward."
Roger De La Cruz and Quincy Obeng both competed in the high jump. De La Cruz placed third with a clearance of 1.99m (6-06.25) and Obeng placed seventh with a clearance of 1.93m (6-04.00).
"Overall the women's sprint teams and the men's 400m did really well today," Bungard added.
The Islanders will split up next weekend with some traveling to Miami and others traveling to Austin and San Antonio to compete.
