COMPLETE RESULTS
HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams put together two impressive days, marking one of the best complete meets in Islanders history. The Islanders broke two school records and had many top performances, Saturday at the 30th annual Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice University at Holloway Field/Ley Track.
"We have never had such a day where everything went this good," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said. "All across the board, in the jumps, sprints, hurdles, relay teams and short and long distances, it was really good. It was one of those days that we got to sit back and enjoy the moment."
Junior Roger De La Cruz broke the school record in the high jump with a clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75) to secure his spot at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Ashley Rosebrough, Kassandrea Son, Ernestine Cray and Brianeka Harris broke the school record with a time of 46.47 to finish third at the meet.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team of William Scott, Matt Youngblood, Cordarius Edmondson and David Carrillo placed sixth with a time of 3:13.68, which is good for third place in the Islanders records. The top time in the Islanders record book in the 4x400 meter is 3.13.55.
In the long jump, Cray and Son placed in the top five to secure their spots at the conference meet. Cray marked a distance of 5.95m (19-06.25) to take the runner up spot in the Islanders records and finish second at the meet. Son placed fourth with a mark of 5.82m (19-01.25), which is good for fifth place in the books. Son holds the school record with a jump of 6.35m, which was recorded at the Southland Conference Championships in 2008.
In the triple jump Son and Cray sealed the top two spots while hitting the qualifying marks. Son placed first with a jump of 12.38m (40-07.50), which places fifth in the Islanders record book. Cray finished behind Son with a distance of 12.37m (40-07.00) which is good for sixth place in the books. Harris also qualified with a mark of 11.01m (36-09.75).
Shannon Girdy finished third in her heat in the 400m to place in the Islanders top 10 records with a time of 59.27. On the men's side, Edmondson took the top spot with a time of 48.70 to qualify for the outdoor championships and place third in the Islanders record books. Youngblood placed fifth in his heat with a time of 49.66 and Carrillo finished in sixth place in his heat with a time of 50.37.
Rosebrough secured her qualification in the 100m with a time of 12.25 to place third. Her time also places in the Islanders top 10 records. Desirae Perryman finished in seventh with a time of 12.83. Perryman also competed in the 200m and won her heat with a time of 25.89. Dallas Crain competed for the men in the 100m and finished third in his heat with a time of 11.30.
Danielle Higgins highlighted the women's 800m with a second-place finish of 2:17.46 to qualify for the outdoor championships. Her time is also good in the top 10 records in ninth place. Sidney Siepert won her heat with a time of 2:20.96 and Megan Wedgworth and Chelsey Arambula finished in fifth and seventh places, respectively. Wedgworth clocked a time of 2:24.98 and Arambula finished with a time of 2:31.84.
Along with De La Cruz's impressive performance in the high jump, Quincy Obeng also qualified with a jump of 1.95m (6-04.75) which sits tied for eighth place in the Islanders record books.
William Scott highlighted the men's 400m with a time of 53.94 to qualify. His time is good for second place in the Islanders records. Brad Hufford holds the school record with a time of 53.65.
In the 800m, Valentinas Rudys and Brandon Lacy both qualified for the outdoor championships. Rudys finished fifth in his heat and fifth in the finals with a time of 1:52.11, which is good for fourth place in the Islanders record book. Lacy placed second in his heat and eighth in the finals with a time of 1:52.85 to mark a fifth-place time in the Islanders books. Wesley McGhee also competed and clocked a time of 2:01.65.
The men's 4x100 relay team, like the women, also had an impressive day. The team of Youngblood, Carrillo, Crain and Edmondson finished second in their heat with a time of 42.55 and placed sixth in the finals. The time is good for eighth place in the Islanders records.
In the men's 200m, Carrillo finished with a time of 22.40, while Youngblood clocked a time of 22.88 and Patrick Scott finished with a time of 23.81. In the men's long jump, Obeng marked a distance of 6.65m (21-10.00), which puts him tied for eighth in the Islanders records. Patrick Scott also competed and marked a distance of 6.41m (21-00.50).
"Over the two days we just went out and competed against some of the top competition around," Flanagan added. "We did extremely well."
The teams will travel to the annual Texas Relays in Austin on Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29.
