Track and Field Wraps Indoor Season at Southland Conference Championships

FINAL RESULTS

NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the indoor season today at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at Mosier Indoor Facility on the University of Oklahoma campus. The women's team finished in seventh place, while the men's team placed 11th.

"Overall the women's sprinters and jumpers did really well and the men's distance runners showed some progress," said Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan. "We had some good results and I expect us to do better outdoors and we are looking forward to it. We're making progress and we had some really good Islander way performances."

The women's team tallied 49 points, two points shy of Lamar in sixth place while Stephen F. Austin won with 117.5 points. Sophomore Ernestine Cray placed second in the triple jump and freshman Shakelia Coleman finished in second in the 60m to highlight the women's side. For the men, freshman Philipp Baar placed sixth in the one mile while freshman Valentinas Rudys recorded a seventh-place finish in the 800m.

The women competed in six events today while the men competed in four. The Islanders opened the day in the triple jump where Cray finished second for the second consecutive year. Last season as a freshman, Cray finished behind Kassandrea Son with a distance of 12.26m (40-05.50). This time, Cray improved her mark from a year ago with a distance of 12.36m (40-6 ¾).

In the 60m finals, Coleman clocked a time of 7.54 to place second behind Shannon Reynolds of UT Arlington with a time of 7.51. Son finished in seventh place with a time of 7.62. Both Coleman and Son improved their preliminary times from yesterday's first day of competition. In the 200m finals sophomore Ashley Rosebrough and Son improved their preliminary times to place fifth and sixth, respectively. Rosebrough clocked a time of 25.04 for fifth place, while Son finished with a time of 25.06 to place one spot behind Rosebrough.

Jasmine Boutte competed in the 800m finals after qualifying yesterday with a preliminary time of 2:16.62. The freshman placed ninth in the finals with a time of 2:18.27. In the 3000m, junior BreAnna Briggs paced the pack with a time of 10:20.59 for 14th place, while Cecilia Gonzalez and Vanessa Galindo placed 20th and 22nd. The Islanders 4x440 yard relay team of Rosebrough, Sidney Siepert, Shannon Girdy and Felisha Salinas clocked a new school record time of 4:03.64.  

On the men's side, Rudys placed seventh in the 800m finals with a time of 1.55.89. In the one mile finals, freshman Philipp Baar finished in sixth place with a time of 4:15.58 and freshman Paul Hansel clocked a time of 4:21.52 to place 10th. Junior Daniel Barlow ran a time of 8:34.11 in the 3000m finals to place seventh while junior Patrick Kimeli clocked a time of 8:38.25 to place 11th in his first indoor 3000m of the season.

Freshman Cordarius Edmonson, junior Matt Youngblood, freshman David Carrillo and sophomore William Scott teamed up in the 4x440 yard relay final to break the school record and place ninth with a time of 3:22.02.  

The Islanders will now look ahead to the Outdoor Season which begins one week from today at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
