Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head baseball coach Scott Malone
has finalized his roster for the fall as the Islanders take to the
diamond this week for the start of off-season workouts.
Of the newcomers, 11 are joining the Islanders from the junior
college ranks, two are transfers from four-year programs and 10 are
coming directly from high school.
Below is a brief look at the numbers for each of the
newcomers.
Ian Campbell
(RHP) - Jr., 6-5, 210 lbs., Glendale, Ariz. (Yavapai Junior
College)
Campbell pitched 41 innings as a sophomore for the second-ranked
JUCO team in the nation finishing 5-3 with two saves, 3.05 ERA and
38 strikeouts. His team was 47-12 on the season. This summer:
played for the Eau Claire Express in the Northwood's League.
Marc Damon
(RHP/3B) - Jr., 6-2, 200 lbs., Tuscon, Ariz. (Pima Junior
College)
Damon was a dual threat at Pima. On the mound, he tossed 82
innings with an 8-3 mark while posting 3.62 ERA and 56 Ks. At the
plate, he averaged .385 with 11 doubles and three triples. This
summer he played for the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas
Collegiate League.
TrentonIrwin (RHP) - Jr., 5-11, 175
lbs., New Braunfels (Blinn Junior College)
Irwin earned first-team All-Conference honors at Blinn after
posting an 8-2 mark with a 3.89 ERA. He was selected to play in the
Texas Junior College All-Star Game.
Roman Madrid
(RHP/C) - Fr., 6-0, 180 lbs., Victoria (Memorial High
School)
Madrid was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 2009 Major
League Baseball Draft but elected to join the Islanders. He was
selected to play in the Texas High School Coaches Association
All-Star Game. Madrid was third team all-state and first team
all-district as a senior. He averaged .371 with 17 doubles and four
home runs. On the mound, Madrid tossed a pair of no-hitters and
tossed 110 Ks in 51 innings.
Alex Silva
(RHP) - Fr., 5-10, 175 lbs., Round Rock (Round Rock High
School)
Silva was an all-district performer as a senior after recording
a 2-1 record along with 10 saves. He played this past summer for
the Austin Wings summer team.
Chris Pena
(LHP) - Jr., 5-10, 195 lbs., Corpus Christi (Alvin Junior
College)
In his second season at Alvin, Pena tossed 48 innings with a
4.20 ERA and 50 strikeouts as a key member of the bullpen helping
team to the NJCAA World Series. The Miller High School graduate had
a combined 15-5 record as a junior and senior with a 1.88 ERA in
his final season and 2.08 ERA as a junior. This past summer he
played for the Victoria Generals which finished ranked No. 22 in
the country amongst summer league teams. Pena limited opposing
batters with a .203 average with 19 Ks in 21 innings.
Adam Hoelscher
(LHP) - Fr., 6-3, 175 lbs., Corpus Christi (Calallen High
School)
As a senior, Hoelscher posted a 4-1 record for the Wildcats who
had one of the top teams not only in the state but in the country.
He was an all-district first-team selection.
Kevin Williams
(LHP) - Fr., 6-2, 210 lbs., Angleton (Angleton High
School)
Williams had a stellar junior season posting a 4-1 record with a
3.25 ERA. He travelled this past summer with the Houston Heat.
Chris Vergne
(OF) - Jr., 5-10, 185 lbs. San Juan, Puerto Rico (Southeastern
Junior College)
Vergne was named first team all-region at Southeastern. As a
freshman, he hit .415 with five doubles and five home runs. In his
second season, he nearly doubled his double total with 13, while
driving in 40 runs. He batted .377.
Jeremy Pinder
(OF) - Fr., 5-10, 175 lbs. Beaumont (Hamshire-Fannett High
School)
Pinder had a standout senior campaign. The outfielder hit .481
as a senior with 35 runs batted in. He was a first-team
all-district selection as senior, while also earning honorable
mention all-state.
Chris Perez
(OF) - Fr., 5-10, 175 lbs. Corpus Christi (King High
School)
Perez just missed the .400 mark as a senior hitting .397 with a
.500 on-base percentage. He was also a standout in the classroom as
he was named to the all-state academic team.
Hayden Moore
(OF) - Fr., 6-0, 170 lbs., Montgomery (Montgomery High
School)
Moore is a speedster who hit for average as well. The outfielder
batted .417 as senior with 22 stolen bases in 23 attempts. He was
named both first-team all-district and all-county. His summer was
spent travelling with the Columbia Angels.
Thurston
Hillman (OF) - Fr., 6-5, 190 lbs, Houston (Westbury High
School)
Hillman hit .342 with 10 stolen bases as a senior to earn
all-district honors. He was a member of the Katy Sting baseball
team over the summer.
Bobby Buckner
(INF) - Jr., 5-11, 180 lbs, Boise, Idaho (Navarro Junior
College)
The son of former MLB great Bill Buckner, this Buckner had a
stellar sophomore season at Navarro JC. He hit .320 with 27 runs
batted in. Buckner, who spent a season at Texas, was an
All-American in high school and was selected to play for the
Washington Nationals area code team.
Trent Martinez
(INF) - Jr., 5-11, 190 lbs, Three Rivers (Seward County Junior
College)
Martinez hit .287 with 11 doubles, five triples and five home
runs. In high school, he was chosen to play for Team Oklahoma in
the Junior Sun Belt Classic and selected to participate in the
Perfect Game Top 100 National Showcase after his senior year of
high school.
Cory Ege (INF)
- 6-3, 190 Cherokee, Iowa (Univ. of Northern
Iowa)
Ege started for two seasons at Northern Iowa before program was
abandoned this past spring. He hit .285 with eight steals in 14
attempts as a sophomore. In high school, he was all-state as a
junior and senior and a honorable mention All-America choice. He
led team to state title as a senior.
Shane Klemcke
(INF) - So., 5-10, 170 lbs, Rockport (McLennan Junior
College)
Klemcke spent one season at McLennan before transferring. He was
a three-time all-district player at Rockport High School. Klemcke
was named to the Academic Honor Society.
Matthew
Ogbeide (INF) - Fr., 6-0, 185 lbs., Edmund, Okla.
(TCU)
Ogbeide joins the Islanders after redshirting the 2009 season at
TCU. He spent the summer playing for Athletes In Action in
Nicaragua. He hit .359 with seven doubles over the summer.
Michael
Perkins (INF) - Fr., 5-10, 170 1bs. Austin (Westlake High
School)
Perkins batted .415 with seven doubles as a senior. He was named
to the all-district team and was chosen for the Austin area
all-star game.
Caleb Marx
(INF) - Jr., 6-4, 200 lbs., Corsicana (Navarro Junior
College)
Marx ended his JUCO career with a bang. He batted .389 with
seven doubles, nine home runs and 42 runs batted in. Mark was a
two-time all-district player in high school.
Mark Mayfield
(C) - Jr., 5-11, 170 lbs. Corsicana (Navarro Junior
College)
Mayfield was the everyday catcher as a freshman and sophomore at
Navarro. He hit .318 with three home runs as a sophomore and
averaged .356 as a freshman. In high school, Mayfield was named his
district's top defensive player of the year.
Collin Greuter
(C) - Jr., 5-10, 175 lbs., Houston (Wharton Junior
College)
Greuter played two seasons at Wharton Junior College. As a
sophomore, Greuter averaged .347 at the plate with seven doubles
and 20 runs batted in.
Josh Meade (C)
- Fr., 6-0, 195 lbs. Hayward, Wisc. (Hayward
HS)
Meade flourished in his final season on the prep level. Meade
batted .450 with 12 doubles, 29 runs batted in and drew 28 base on
balls in 24 games. He was a first-team all-conference and
all-district honors. Meade was also chosen to play in the Wisconsin
state all-star game as well as the Perfect Game National Showcase.
He also played summer baseball for the Midwest Blazers Scout
Team.
