Former Texas
A&M University-Corpus Christi men's basketball player Cedric
Smith was taken 12th overall in the second round of the
2007 CBA draft by the Rio Grande Valley Silverados.
Smith, a
two-year letterwinner and starter for the Islanders, averaged 11.2
points while hitting .629 from the field for his career. In his first season he was
second on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game while
hitting a team-best .662 from the field. As a junior, he was named to the
All-Independent team as he ranked in the top-10 in scoring and led
all independents in field goal percentage.
In his final
season with the Islanders, he scored 9.8 points and hit just under
60 percent from the field in helping A&M-Corpus Christi to its
first ever Southland Conference regular season and tournament
titles.
Along with
Smith, the Silverados signed former Lambuth player Ivan Jenkins as
their first pick as well as Baylor's Patrick Fields as their third
pick.
Rio Grande chose Jarrius Jackson from Texas Tech and 7-1 center
Colin Lien of Texas-Pan American fourth and fifth
respectively.
