The Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi softball team swept Prairie View A&M
Wednesday afternoon at Chapman Field winning 5-0 and 14-1 in the
doubleheader. With the sweep, the Islanders ended a five-game
losing streak and improved to 6-17.
In the first game,
the Islanders were lead by Jennifer Cummings' one-hit shutout. The
shutout was the first of the season for Cummings and the Islanders.
Cummings had a season-high 10 strikeouts while walking none in the
contest
Andrea Simancas
led the Islanders with two hits and drove in two runs, while
scoring two runs herself. Her two-run triple highlighted a
three-run fourth that gave Cummings the added insurance she needed
to get the win.
In the second
game, the Islanders scored season-best 14 runs on 10 hits bringing
the run rule into affect in the fifth inning.
Andrea Gonzalez's
two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth helped cap an
eight-run inning. The home run was the third baseman's third of the
season. Amber Robinson also drove in a pair of runs. Robinson was
one of four Islanders with two hits in the second game along with
Stephanie Estrada, Brenda Guerrero, and Simancas.
Four Islanders had
two hits, including Brenda Guerrero who was 2-for-2 on the day.
Freshman Margo Hurdt earned her first win as an Islander. Hurdt
struckout five batters and gave up just one hit in five innings
pitched. The one run she allowed was unearned.
The Islanders will
resume Southland Conference play this weekend at Chapman Field as
they take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a three-game
series. The conference series begins with a doubleheader on
Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m., and with the finale on Sunday at 12
p.m.
