Texas A&M
University-Corpus Christi shot 31.7 percent from the field,
including less than 10 percent from beyond the three-point line as
Troy took a 73-52 win over the Islanders.
The Islanders
(1-4) hit just 2-of-26 from the three-point line, while the Trojans
knocked down 45 percent from downtown. For the first time in 46 games the
Islanders did not have a player score in double figures. Chris Daniels led the way with
nine points, while Justin Reynolds had eight points with a
game-high 11 rebounds.
Troy jumped out
to a 7-0 lead before Reynolds broke the scoreless drought at the
16:54 mark when he hit the front end of a pair of free throws. The Islanders fell behind 24-12
with 7:39 to go after a Brandon Hazzard three-pointer, but they
erased the lead to just one thanks to a 9-0 run with 3:43 to go in
the half.
Hazzard's
bucket was the last field goal the Trojans would make the rest of
the half. A pair of free
throws by Matt Slatnick with 48 seconds to play sent the Islanders
to the locker room behind 30-29.
Daniels gave
A&M-Corpus Christi their lead of the game with a five-foot lay
in to open the scoring in the second half. The lead was short lived as Justin
Jonus hit one of the team's 10 three-pointers to give the Trojans
the lead for good with 17:26 to go.
A 23-9 run
midway through the second half all but did the Islanders in as they
never came within 15 points the rest of the way.
The Islanders
did pull down a season-high 45 rebounds and have now out-rebounded
their opponent in all five games thus far. Daniels pulled down a season-high nine
boards, while Shannon Shorter pulled down five.
A&M-Corpus
Christi will hit the road once again when they head to Stillwater,
Okla. to face Oklahoma State on Wed. night at 7 p.m.
