In their first Southland Conference match in school history, the
Islander volleyball team had two players record double-doubles and
libero Laura North broke the school record for digs in a five-game
match with 37, but it wasn't enough as Sam Houston State spoiled
their home opener with a 3-2 win.
The previous record for digs in a five-game match was 27 set last
season by Carol Marcengo against Utah Valley State and marks the
first time any player in school history has reached the 30-dig
mark.
Christie Feliz and Kasey McBrearty posted double-doubles with Feliz
recording 15 kills and 14 digs, while McBrearty had 14 kills with
14 digs. The offense was led by Lauren Paslay with 16 kills, one
away from her career-high.
The Islanders went up 1-0 in the match with a 30-23 win in the
first game, hitting a team-best .279, collecting 17 kills on just
five errors. Sam Houston State kept the match close with a 31-29
win in game two, taking advantage of a -.051 hitting percentage by
the Islanders.
A&M-Corpus Christi bounced back to win game three, 30-26 behind
McBrearty and Feliz, who paced the team's .277 hitting percentage.
The Islanders recorded a season-high 62 kills for the match and
recorded 91 digs, just short of the school record of 93.
Sam Houston State rallied to take a 30-21 game-four win and
followed that up with a 15-8 win in game five to clinch the
match.
The Bearkats were led by Lindsey Roebken's 19 kills and had a
double-double from Cynthia Yarotsky, who tallied 11 kills and 22
digs.
The Islanders will remain at home when they host Stephen F. Austin
tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Moody Fieldhouse.
