NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team suffered a tough defeat in its conference opener on Thursday evening, putting together a nice overall effort but conceding late to fall to Stephen F. Austin by a final score of 2-1.
The loss came despite the Islanders (3-4-2, 0-1-0 SLC) dominating many offensive stats on the night, outshooting the Ladyjacks (4-6-0, 1-0-0 SLC) 21-12 overall and 10-5 on tries on goal while also attempting six corner kicks as opposed to three on the other side. This included a red-hot first half in which they attempted seven more shots than the hosts and took three corners while not conceding one.
This start for A&M-Corpus Christi was evident from the opening kickoff, beginning with a shot from
Ashley Wilson in the fifth minute that forced a save and an early corner kick. A try from
Katie Porter that sailed just out of play came soon after, and after the ensuing goal kick, the Islanders started another run that began at the feet of
Sophia Dias. The defender fed a streaking
MyJoi Anderson, who then sent a cross into the box that was banged home by
Vanessa Wimbish with an excellent left-footed finish to open up the scoring. This marked Wimbish's first goal of the season to date and the second of her career, with the other one coming nearly a year ago against Lamar on October 2, 2025.
Even after this early score, the Islanders were not satisfied, continuing to turn up the heat by first earning a pair of corner kicks drawn within a few minutes of each other. Some more opportunities would come as the half drew toward its conclusion, with
Cilia Leal Cardona taking a few tries at goal and
Emmie Barton sending a free kick into the box with six minutes ago that forced a punch save from SFA keeper Brandie Musser. The team was unable to put any of these in the back of the net, but they still put the capper on a strong showing in the opening 45 minutes and sent the visitors into the break with the lead.
The time in the locker room did not slow down A&M-Corpus Christi, as it started to pick things up again on offense early on in the second half, sparking the attack with a pair of shots from Porter and
Isabella Castellanos Lopes and a corner kick that was earned after a nice effort from
Grace Clay. These did not bear fruit, however, and in a reversal of the run of play, SFA found a counterattack soon after and capitalized with the equalizing goal in the 58
th minute.
Now locked in a tight battle once again, both teams had some prime chances at taking the lead, starting with a chance from the Islanders in the 69
th minute when Wilson attempted a firm shot that was headed for the net if not for a diving stop from Musser. Just a couple minutes later, it was the Ladyjacks' turn for a near miss, with the hosts getting a breakaway with 10 minutes to go that was turned back when
Jessie Spurrell came off her line and made a beautiful challenge to turn back the shot at net.
This back-and-forth brought the night to its climax, at which point the Islanders were dealt the heartbreaking blow, first getting turned away on its final real chances and then conceding the game-winning goal on the other end in the 88
th minute. This late score left them with just under two minutes to respond, which proved to be not enough to make a comeback happen.
On the individual side, A&M-Corpus Christi had seven different players attempt multiple shots, with that list being Porter, Wilson, Barton, Wimbish, Castellanos Lopes, Leal Cardona and
Jessiny Aguillon. Of these, Wilson, Barton, Leal Cardona and Aguillon put two of their tries on net, while Wimbish came through with the lone goal of the night.
The Islanders will now try to shake off the defeat in their next match next week, staying idle on Sunday before returning home next Thursday to start a three-match homestand with a matchup against UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
