A&M-Corpus Christi Shows Fight in Setback to Detroit Mercy

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team stayed competitive deep into the game before dropping a 5-1 decision to Detroit Mercy on day one of Texas Tech's Jeanne McHaney Memorial Classic.

The Islanders (3-14) remained within reach for much of the matchup behind steady pitching and improved defensive execution after an early setback. Detroit Mercy capitalized on a three-run third inning to gain the advantage and held on despite A&M-Corpus Christi responding by limiting further opportunities and keeping pressure on the Titans into the late innings.

Both teams traded scoreless frames through the first two innings as starter Kendra Winfrey worked through early traffic and the Islander defense turned a key double play in the second to halt momentum. Detroit Mercy broke through in the third, using consecutive hits and an unearned run to take a 3-0 lead.

A&M-Corpus Christi began to find rhythm offensively midway through the game. Jada Zepeda jumpstarted a fourth-inning opportunity with a double down the left-field line, and the Islanders continued to put balls in play as they searched for a breakthrough. Relief pitcher Josie Whitehead entered in the fourth and helped steady the game, retiring key hitters and allowing the Islanders to remain within striking distance.

The Islanders saw production in the sixth inning when Zoey Stewart drove a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a passed ball. Zepeda followed with an RBI groundout to bring Stewart home and cut the deficit to 3-1, shifting momentum toward the Islanders entering the final inning.

However, Detroit Mercy added two runs in the seventh as insurance for the final result.

Stewart paced the Islanders offensively, finishing 1-for-3 with a double and scoring the team's lone run, while Zepeda also went 1-for-3 with a double and was responsible for driving Stewart in.

In the circle, Winfrey struck out two over three innings of work, and Whitehead provided four innings of relief while allowing just two runs to keep the Islanders within reach late.
