A&M-Corpus Christi Downed by UIW in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team could not earn a big conference victory on the road on Thursday evening, getting taken down by Southland-leading UIW by a final score of 3-0 after falling into a hole that it could not climb out of.

The Islanders (4-6-3, 1-3-1 SLC) found themselves needing to make up ground early on in the match, as after a quiet opening, the Cardinals (7-5-2, 4-1-0 SLC) jumped onto the board first in the 15th minute on a strike from nearly 30 yards out from Louise Coates. Less than 10 minutes later, the hosts then doubled up, making it a two-goal disadvantage for the visitors when Montanna Mathews found the back of the net after a scramble in the box following a corner kick.

After this turn of events, A&M-Corpus Christi made its attempt at working its way back into things, getting its offense heated up for the first time as the half winded down with a pair of shots on goal from Zahria Fuller and one by fellow freshman Natalie Taylor. Out of the break, the team remained on the attack, drawing two free kicks early on and getting a shot from Taylor that sailed just over the crossbar. A corner kick and a shot from Vanessa Wimbish followed soon after, but none of these were able to hit paydirt for the first score of the night.

Later on, the climb for the Islanders became harder, as UIW once again scored in the 73rd minute to bring the score to 3-0. They would keep fighting after this, getting shots off from Wimbish, Isabella Castellanos Lopes and Sophia Dias, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome when it was all said and done.

Individually, Wimbish led the way in shots for the Islanders with four and two on goal, and she was followed with multiple tries by Taylor with three and Fuller with two. In net, Addie Brown recorded nine saves in total, which went down as her most in a match so far this year.

The Islanders will now try to shake off the tough defeat when they return home over the weekend, coming back to Corpus Christi to take on Northwestern State on Sunday at noon.
