Islanders Fall to Fresno State on Sunday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team could not close out their nonconference schedule with a win on Sunday afternoon, getting taken down by Fresno State by a final score of 4-0 in its return home after a season-long three-game road trip.

The Islanders (2-4-2) were caught on the wrong foot by a hot Bulldogs (3-2-2) offense, with Fresno State continuing its momentum from a 3-0 win on Thursday with an outburst that saw it score three goals in the first half and one in the second. The hosts did manage to get their offense moving in a positive direction after falling into the early hole, putting a shot on goal right out of halftime and two more in quick succession 15 minutes later, but they could not convert the chances that they needed to get back into things once again.

Junior Vanessa Wimbish was the biggest driving force for A&M-Corpus Christi despite playing just 40 minutes, forcing a save on a one-timer off a throw-in at the 49-minute mark and another one in the 63rd on a crafty shot that forced a punch over the net. Junior Katie Porter also had one of the best chances on the day for the team, sending a booming shot on goal right before the break that was narrowly kept out of the back of the net. In the stat sheet, both Wimbish and Porter led the way with a pair of shots apiece.

Sunday's game also served as the Islanders' Senior Day, with the team honoring forward Mai-Lisa Atis pregame with a ceremony that included family and teammates. The fifth-leading goal scorer in A&M-Corpus Christi program history managed to put a shot on goal in the 65th minute, sending a header on net that was saved by the Fresno State keeper.

The Islanders will now try to bounce back in their first conference game of the year, heading back on the road to take on Houston Christian to open up Southland play on Thursday at 7 p.m.
