SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team got on the board in the latter innings in a comeback attempt but UTSA closed out an 8-2 decision Tuesday night in a midweek nonconference finale at Roadrunner Field.
The Islanders (10-35) escaped UTSA's attempt at calling game early with a needed run in the top of the fifth. Another plated runner in the sixth showed life from the visitors but a quick deficit to open the game caught up to them as the Islanders ran out of room for a rally.
UTSA managed to plate two in their first outing before gaining speed in the third where they scored six for an 8-0 lead. The Islanders saw opportunity dwindling, but
Taylor Reyes kept them in it with the solo shot to left center to finally get them on the board.
It marks Reyes's first career home run as the freshman sent it over on the first pitch she saw in the at-bat.
The Islanders continued trying to chip in late, drawing back-to-back walks in the sixth for two on and no outs. A sac bunt from
Zoey Stewart advanced both runners into scoring position before
Karisa Lopez put her ball in play to score
Erynne Castillo from third.
The remaining runner would be left stranded, however, as UTSA minimized the damage and any attempt at a comeback as the home squad finalized an 8-2 win.
Aside from Reyes's homer, only
Paolina Baez and
Ripley Welker could knock hits against UTSA's pitching staff which saw two throwers in the circle today. Baez is on a five-game hitting streak now after her lead-off single tonight.
On deck:
The Islanders are in their last week of the regular season and will head to Northwestern State for a vital three-game conference series this weekend that will determine their placement within the Southland Tournament.
