Islanders Begin SLC Midseason Strong with Sweeps over Nicholls, McNeese

THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team got their campaign towards a third consecutive championship to a dominant start, toppling Nicholls and McNeese in 5-0 sweeps Friday on day one of the SLC Midseason Tournament.

The Islanders (9-8, 4-0 SLC) refused to relinquish a point to a conference opponent today, sweeping both Nicholls and McNeese with every court posting a straight-set victories in both matches.

They have continued their reign over conference opponents in regular season matches, having yet to drop one since head coach Gayle Stammer took over at the helm in 2016. They are now 37-0 under Stammer against Southland teams in the regular season.

The day saw a lineup mixup, with multiple pairs playing on two different courts today. Kela Moreno/Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo opened the day at court two for a 21-9, 21-8 win before moving to court three against the Cowgirls to post a pair of 21-17 sets.

Elizabeth Cortez/Ashlyn Rough played at courts three and four today, winning their duals 21-15, 21-10 and 21-7, 21-12. The other consistent pairing was Bryce Ranney/Jade Bennett who started at the fours with a 21-13, 21-9 win and then took care of business at flight five at 21-9, 21-13.

Tess Spaansen took on two partners today both at court one, first defeating the Colonels with two 21-5 sets with Kristin Bobay. She then teamed back up with familiar partner Madison Morrow in the latter match to take it 21-13, 21-15 while Bobay paired with Millie Olsson for a 21-7, 21-10 win.

Ruby Kayser/Cimone Woodard also saw action in the weekend opener, playing a 21-15, 21-13 decision at court five.

The Islanders will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. against HCU and New Orleans, respectively. They will play the same schedule Sunday against San Jose State and Boise State to wrap up a hopeful championship weekend.
