COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team begins the second half of its indoor schedule over the weekend, heading north on Friday and Saturday for the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
Events will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on the first day and 10 a.m. on the next. Competing in the event alongside the Islanders are Texas A&M, Baylor, Houston, Mississippi State, North Texas, Oklahoma Baptist, Rice, SMU, TCU, East Texas A&M, Texas State, UT-Arlington, UTSA and Western Texas College.
"I am really looking forward to the next four weeks!" said head coach
Bryan Jackson. "We had a great month of January in competition, but more importantly in preparation. Both teams are in such a great spot, and I can't wait to see the performances we put up at Texas A&M this weekend."
The Islanders return to College Station for the second consecutive meet, most recently competing at the Ted Nelson Invitational two weeks ago. The highlight of their time there was the performance of junior
Cyan Green, who took home the team's first event win of the season after reaching 21.20m in the women's weight throw. This improved upon her own program record set in the opening meet of the season, and it set both the Ted Nelson Invitational record and the Texas A&M facility record, which she will have a chance to break again this weekend. For her efforts, Green was named Southland Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the period of January 22-February 4.
The distance group for the Islanders will also try to build upon a very solid showing last time out, where multiple competitors made their way onto the program's indoor leaderboards. The most notable showing came in the women's mile, with freshman
Phylis Kibet setting a new school record with a time of 4:45.98 and freshmen
Alicia Finnis and
Embla Hreimsdottir coming in right behind in third and fifth place respectively. Seniors
Chloe Garcia Grafing and
Kate Brockman also joined cracked the top 10 in the 800m, and on the men's side, junior
Ewan Wheelwright and
Dillon Smith did the same in the mile and 800m respectively.
Results for the Ted Nelson Invitational will be available to follow along live both days, and the meet can also be watched live on SEC Network+ throughout the weekend.
