CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will finally make its debut on their home field for the 2025 season, hosting UTSA at Chapman Field for a 3 p.m. matchup Tuesday.
The Islanders (4-10) are looking to recover from a shaky weekend on the road, finally getting the opportunity to play on familiar territory after their original home opener was set for last week but got pushed due to weather.
They have won their home opener in each of the last four seasons, including in 2023 against the Roadrunners (9-4) with an 8-2 victory.
"We have been out of town for the entire month, so we are excited to be home even if it just for the day before heading out on the road again," said head coach
Kathleen Rodriguez. "We look forward to playing in front of our people tomorrow!"
Leading the Islanders into their home debut will be the trio of
Paolina Baez,
Skylar Heger, and
Crystal Davila who seem to top the team in nearly every offensive category. They follow each other in batting average, hits, RBIs, and doubles, and are three of the four Islanders to have hit a home run this season.
The three of them account for 31 of the team's 83 hits out of 15 players to have recorded at least one this season.
Baez has particularly shown in her senior season, driving in over twice as many runs than the next Islander with 12 RBIs. She leads the team in slugging at a .488 mark. Making an impact in the field as well, she seconds the team in both putouts (42) and double plays turned (8).
The Islanders trail UTSA 36-27 in the all-time series but won the last meeting between the two 4-2 on a neutral field. They hold a 17-16 advantage over the Roadrunners when playing them at home.
