MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team couldn't recoup from an offensive slump, falling 5-1 to Lipscomb and 8-0 to South Alabama on the final day of the Mardi Gras Classic Saturday.
Similar to yesterday, the Islanders (4-10) stayed near even with their opponents in hits but continued to struggle capitalizing on them while Lipscomb and South Alabama were both able to find their rhythm to plate runs.
Paolina Baez was the only one to knock a hit in both games, reaching base in every game this tournament. She is tied for team-lead in hits on the year with 10 with
Ripley Welker and
Crystal Davila, the latter registering a hit against the Jaguars.
Game 13 // Lipscomb 5, A&M-Corpus Christi 1
The Islanders attempted a fast start against the Bisons, with
Paolina Baez,
Mimi Thornton, and
Karisa Lopez each knocking a single between the first and second innings to have runners on early before being stranded. Meanwhile, Lipscomb only saw one player find themselves on the base in those first two outings before they were able to make noise in the third with three runs.
After a quiet fourth, Lipscomb tacked on another two in the fifth before the Islanders were finally able to get one on the board in the sixth.
Erynne Castillo sent one up the middle to lead things off before
Crystal Davila advanced her to second on the sac bunt. Being aggressive on the base paths, Castillo stole third and scored on the heads-up play after the Lipscomb catcher overthrew her third baseman.
Despite the three-up, three-down inning by
Kendra Winfrey, who pitched the final three innings without conceding an earned run, giving the Islanders another chance at the plate, they couldn't close the gap to fall 5-1.
Game 14 // South Alabama 8, A&M-Corpus Christi 0
South Alabama scored two early, only reaching base off two walks, a throwing error from the Islanders, and a few wild pitches. The Islanders were actually first to single with Baez knocking an infield single in the top of the first.
It was the only hit until the Jaguars got one on the board in the third where they were able to tack on another to their 3-0 lead. The teams continued to remain deadlocked in hits after Davila singled to left in the top of the fifth, but the bottom frame had the host Jaguars break through with a sudden burst, scoring five off four hits for the 8-0 win.
On deck:
The Islanders will finally return home, after their original home opener was delayed a week to this Wednesday, Feb. 26 against UTSA. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Chapman Field.
