CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will spend the weekend playing across two states, starting with a stop at Southern Thursday before continuing on to play in South Alabama's Mardi Gras Classic Friday and Saturday for four games.
The game at Southern will be played in Baton Rouge Thursday at 1 p.m. before the Islanders trek on to Mobile, Alabama. Friday they will play Maine at 10 a.m. and Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. in back-to-back games. A&M-Corpus Christi will close out the weekend on play Saturday against Lipscomb at 11:30 a.m. and hosts South Alabama that night at 7 p.m.
The Islanders (4-6) are coming off their second straight road tournament to get the year underway, posting a pair of wins both weekends. Most recently, the Islanders garnered victories over Montana and Northern Colorado this past weekend. Against the latter, they scored 12 runs en route to the victory which marked the most scored in a game by A&M-Corpus Christi since the 2024 season opening game against Arlington Baptist when they scored 13.
The weekend saw
Ripley Welker extend her offensive prowess, now on an eight-game streak of hitting base with the last six at least being courtesy of a hit. She is tied for team-lead in hits at nine alongside
Crystal Davila.
Davila is batting a .300 on the year, coming second to
Skylar Heger who is averaging .320 at the plate. Both of them are slugging over .500 as is
Paolina Baez at .548. Baez leads the team so far in RBIs (11), home runs (2), and runs (5).
