LAS CRUCES, NM. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team ran into another strong outing from the tournament host, falling 10-2 to New Mexico State to conclude the Troy Cox Classic Sunday.
The Islanders (4-6) rematched the Aggies (7-4) today after falling to them the previous night and unfortunately was met with another high slugging performance from the host team for a similar result.
Despite a lower score, A&M-Corpus Christi were able to get six hits past the Aggies compared to their five last night, all coming from a different batter.
Crystal Davila and
Ripley Welker were two of the six to knock a hit, as they are tied for team-lead in hits with nine each on the year.
It helps Welker also extend to a six-game hitting streak but an eight-game streak of reaching base.
Game 10 // New Mexico State 10, A&M-Corpus Christi 2
The Aggies hit hard to start things off, homering in the first for a 2-0 lead. It was replicated in the third as the home team tacked on another pair before the Islanders would finally see some offensive production in the top of the fourth.
Crystal Davila led off the inning with the infield single before
Skylar Heger drew a walk next.
Taylor Reyes and
Isabella Hune replaced them on the basepaths as pinch runners, as the two advanced following the base hit from
Dafne Mercado to load the bases.
With no outs,
Karisa Lopez sent her ball deep enough to score Reyes from third on the sac fly and two batters later saw
CJ Castilla send one to the gap in left to bring Hune home as the Islanders cut New Mexico State's lead in half at 4-2.
After scoring another in the bottom frame, New Mexico State then broke through with five runs in the fifth to employ the run rule at a 10-2 final.
On deck:
The Islanders will now look to their home opener, set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they welcome UTSA to Chapman Field. It will be their only home contest in the month of February, not returning to their field until they open conference play March 7 against UIW.
