LAS CRUCES, NM – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will get back in action this weekend, this time heading west to compete in New Mexico State's 2025 Troy Cox Classic Friday through Sunday at the NM State Softball Complex.
The Islanders (2-3) will get the weekend started against #17 Nebraska Friday at 10 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Northern Colorado. On Saturday, A&M-Corpus Christi will face off against Montana at 3:15 p.m. before taking on hosts New Mexico State in an 8 p.m. night cap. They will then rematch the Aggies Sunday to wrap up the tournament at 12:30 p.m.
Over opening weekend,
Skylar Heger and
Paolina Baez ended as team leads with four hits each, while the latter also drove in the team-high six RBIs with a home run and two doubles on the weekend.
Zoey Stewart was the most efficient in her at-bats, however, batting a .429 with three hits and a run herself through the first five games of the year.
While Baez gets credited with the first home run of the year, four different Islanders went yard over opening weekend including Heger as well as
Monee Montilla and
Crystal Davila. Davila also barreled two doubles both coming in the win over Bryant.
In the circle,
Malia Williams came out of the weekend with a 1.66 ERA in addition to earning the two wins to her record. Through 12.2 total innings pitched, she had six batters faced down strike out.
This weekend will mark A&M-Corpus Christi's first-ever meetings with Nebraska and Montana. The Islanders lead Northern Colorado 2-1 all-time after splitting a pair with them back in 2022 while they also hold a 7-6 edge over New Mexico State all-time following two wins in 2023 against the Aggies.
