Early Advantage Holds as Islanders Blank Texas Southern 2-0

HOUSTON, Texas – A pair of first half goals secured Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team's 2-0 victory over Texas Southern Thursday night for its first road win of the season.

It marks the second straight win for the Islanders (3-2-2) and first on the road under first-year head coach Daniel Clitnovici. It comes after senior Storm Harris netted one in the 30th minute before she assisted on the next goal scored by senior Morgan Westbury in the 43rd minute for the 2-0 final.

"I'm really proud of the team, we had a really positive week of practice and tonight they really stepped up and played two good halves of soccer," said Clitnovici. "We controlled the game from start to finish and I couldn't have asked for more from the team tonight, the staff is really happy with the performance."

Harris' goal marks just her second in her career, her first coming last season against Nicholls on Oct. 8. It is her fifth career assist, however, after recording a pair in 2022 and 2023.

She recorded three points in the game, her new season total. She is one point away from tying her season best after recording four in points in the 2023 season.

It is Westbury's 11th goal of her career, second of the season, and second in a row after she also scored in A&M-Corpus Christi's 5-1 win over Prairie View the last time out. She is the third player on the team to score multiple goals this year so far.

Westbury is now tied for team-lead in points on the year with six.

The 2-0 score also marks A&M-Corpus Christi and senior Zoe Theriot's second shutout of the season, but first winning one after the previous shutout resulted in a 0-0 tie with Tarleton State. Theriot played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded six saves.

The Islanders remain an undefeated 7-0 against Texas Southern in the all-time series. It is the second year in a row that A&M-Corpus Christi shut the Tigers out and fifth time total.

"All in all, we really should have had a few more goals but we are very grateful for the win on the road and the shutout, the ladies deserve this. We also had some players who haven't gotten much game time this season perform really well tonight and I'm happy for them and their performance, hopefully this will lead to more time for them," said Clitnovici.

The Islanders will return home to rematch the Tigers on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium for their nonconference finale. It is the first time in the all-time series history that the teams will play each other twice in one season.
