CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will be recognized at the inaugural Coastal Bend Sports Hall of Fame & Awards Show Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the American Bank Center, presented by the Corpus Christi Sports Commission.
The Coastal Bend Sports Hall of Fame & Awards Show celebrates both the achievements of local sports legends, highlighting their contributions to the rich athletic tapestry of the Coastal Bend region while also celebrating the past year's best athletes and teams.
This year, the Islanders will be recognized with four nominations as the women's basketball team is nominated for Coastal Bend Team of the Year while graduate
Alecia Westbrook is nominated for Coastal Bend Player of the Year, senior
Paige Allen for Moment of the Year, and head coach
Royce Chadwick for Coach of the Year.
Islanders Athletics will also be the honoree reception sponsor for the event. The event is open to the public, with tickets available to be purchased
here.
"We are flattered and honored for both our individuals and our team," said Chadwick. "It is wonderful recognition for our university. We are very excited to attend the banquet and look forward to representing the university in this event."
The 2023-24 women's basketball team had a historic year, winning the SLC Tournament for the first time in program history to advance to the NCAA First Round against No. 1 USC. It was the third championship in five years for the Islanders.
Westbrook leaves her mark on each championship won, as the graduate retires her Islanders jersey after breaking the program career records with 3,891 minutes played, 1,163 rebounds (829 def. rebounds), 543 free throws made, 720 free throws attempted, and 40 double-doubles. At the Big Dance, she capped her career with her 82
nd double figure scoring game after putting up 12 points against the Trojans.
Allen was named the SLC Tournament MVP after spearheading the title for the Islanders, hitting the game-winner in the semifinals against Southeastern before turning in her career-high 22 points in the championship game against Lamar.
Chadwick concluded his 12
th year at the helm, making it a memorable one as he finally returned to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in his career. He ends the season with 750 career wins.
