HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team closed out strong at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championship meet, posting multiple podium finishes Saturday at Holloway Field.
"It's hard to believe that year one has come to a close," said first-year head coach Bryan Jackson. "I am proud of the athletes the toed the line this weekend with purpose. We had a number of lifetime and season bests here at this championship."
Additionally, the women's 4x100m relay group of
Khiah Lara-Turner,
Capri Wilson,
Erial Fontenot, and
Nia Hampton broke the school record with a 44:96s time, winning silver in the event just .13 seconds behind first.
It wasn't Wilson's only medal of the day, as the senior raced a 11.79s 100m to finish third for her second trip to the podium on the weekend.
Also earning a third-place finish was sophomore
Myla Tate who recorded a 12.34m leap in the triple jump for bronze. It's an improvement from her 12.19m jump in the event from the Indoor Championships where she came away with gold.
Junior Nyahdol Thichiot came in right behind Tate at fourth in the triple jump at 12.19m to contribute four points to the team. Thichiot also jumped her PR in the long jump at 5.69m, finishing eighth in the event. Freshman
Faith Ramos added a final point after placing eighth in the 5,000m.
For the women, they ended earning 28 of their 32 total points today alone.
On the men's side, the 5000m race saw two runners too familiar with the podium as junior
Kelvin Kimaiyo and graduate
Dennis Kipngeno came in at second and third in the event. Kimaiyo raced a 14:24.16s while Kipngeno crossed at 14:29.03.
It is Kimaiyo's second silver medal at the championships this weekend after also finishing second in the 10k.
"We are done earlier than we had hoped, but we will now take this time to regroup and start the process of building for the future. I couldn't be mire excited about the hard work that is ahead of us," said Jackson.
