TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball team took down #16 Florida Atlantic to open up its final regular season tournament of 2024 in a narrow 3-2 decision on day one of the Florida State Unconquered Invitational before falling with a reversed score to UAB in the afternoon.
It marks A&M-Corpus Christi's (24-5) first top-20 win of the season but second in program history. It is their highest ranked win ever after the first top-20 win came against #18 Arizona last year. It comes after the Islanders have been ranked #20 for the last three straight weeks.
The win also extended their win streak to 13 before ultimately having that severed by UAB later in the day. The Islanders had defeated UAB earlier this season 3-2.
The reigning SLC Pair of the Week of
Cassie Dodd and
Chloe Tome went 2-0 on the day, battling out a pair of three-set grueling duals. They clinched the match against FAU after the match ran tied at 2-2 and despite dropping a tough 29-27 first set, they came back to win the court with 21-19 and 15-12 sets.
Dodd/Tome went down again against the Blazers before answering back with another reverse sweep, taking set two 21-19 and set three 15-7 for the pair's 2-0 day both at court two.
Helping with the ranked win was
Elizabeth Cortez and
Kela Moreno as the duo opened the match with a straight-set victory at flight five. Garnering the second point was A&M-Corpus Christi's ones, as
Kristin Bobay and
Madison Morrow topped FAU 21-16, 21-14.
In the second match of the day,
Tori Johnson and
Raven Jordan were able to shake off a tough first match loss and grinded out a three-set victory at court four over UAB. They took an easy 21-9 first set before UAB evened the dual, but the duo was able to secure the win in extra points with a 16-14 set three.
The Islanders will close out the regular season tournament slate tomorrow at 12:30 pm. and 2:45 p.m. against North Alabama and #4 FSU, respectively.
