Islander Sophomore Sets PR at Texas Invitational

| By:
AUSTIN – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sophomore Erial Fontenot ran a personal best 56.42 seconds in the women's 400-meter dash on Saturday as the Islanders track and field team competed during the second and final day of the Texas Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Fontenot also competed in the 200, where she was 13th with a time of 56.42, while teammate Khiah Lara-Turner was close behind in 16th place with a 56.91.

The Islanders continued to be a force in the women's triple jump as junior Nyadhol Thichiot and sophomore Myla Tate each finished in the top six, and freshman Kameron Huerta was 11th. Thichiot, who finished third in Houston a week ago with a personal-best leap, finished fourth on Saturday with a wind-aided leap of 12.48 meters (40 feet, 11.5 inches). Tate was sixth with a jump of 12.31 (40-4.75), and Huerta had a best leap of 10.97 (36-0).

In the men's triple jump, freshman Damacio Hooks nearly topped his personal best of 14.69 meters with a leap of 14.66 (48-1.25) to finish ninth.

"Today we competed much better than yesterday," TAMU-CC coach Bryan Jackson said. "I was very pleased with how Nyadhol, Myla and Damacio competed in the triple jump. Another highlight for me was Erial running her lifetime best in the 400 meters."

In the women's 100, senior Capri Wilson was .15 seconds off her PR with an 11.78, while freshman Nia Hampton ran a 12.02.

In the women's 800, senior Riley Cowan ran a 2:18.84, while sophomore Emil Hajjaj was 10th in the men's 800 with a time of 1:53.30.

Friday's competition was highlighted by junior Kelvin Kimaiyo, who was fifth in the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 3 minutes, 54.42 seconds. It was the eighth-best time in school history and the fastest time at TAMU-CC in more than a decade.

The Islanders will take a week off before the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on May 7-9 at Rice University in Houston.

"We have a much-needed weekend off to focus on some last-minute sharpening and our final exams," Jackson said. "I am looking forward to seeing how this group approaches another championship opportunity."
