NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Making its highest finish at the Southland Conference Championships, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team turned in its best round of golf on the final day to move up to third place.
After three rounds at the Bandit Golf Club, the Islanders rounded out a solid week of the play at the championships after carding their best round of a 301 Wednesday to finish third overall. It is the highest finish the program has made at the tournament, improving on their fourth-place finish from the previous three seasons.
Every Islander shot their best round on the final day all in the 70s, including senior
Lucie Charbonnier who finished fourth overall individually with a 73-75-70 – 218 (+5). She finished every tournament this spring in the top-five.
"The team gave it all they had today," said head coach
Pat Stephens. "They played with a lot of passion and desire. We wanted to put up one of the best rounds of the tournament, and it looked like we were going to do it before letting it get away through the last stretch of holes. But all five players were int eh 70s today.
"I am so proud of our seniors, Reese and Lucie. Not only for what they have done this week, but for the contributions to the Islanders women's golf program during their four years as an Islander. Lucie had another great tournament, fourth place with a 70 (-1) today," said Stephens.
Freshman
Carla Puente Fernandez shot the second-best round of the day for the Islanders, improving by four strokes to shoot the 76 to finish the tournament at a 240. Freshman
Samantha Gibbs was one behind at a 77 on the day to finish with a 77-82-77 – 236 card for a 16
th-place finish.
Sophomore
Elsa Tornvall and senior
Reese Drezins both submitted a 78 in the final round. Tornvall, who substituted on the team last minute, finished tied for 17
th individually while Drezins rounded out the team at 25
th.
It was just the fourth time this year that the Islanders had each member of the team shoot in the 70s.
"The team will take a few days off and begin to prepare for postseason play at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde, Florida. We will be looking to defend our title that we've won the previous three years," said Stephens.
