EDINBURG, Texas – Turning in another stellar round, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team maintained its lead through the final 18 holes at the Vaqueros Invitational to win its second tournament in a row.
Breaking the program record for low round, inevitably having her also break the program's low 54-hole total, freshman
Samantha Gibbs won her first individual title after shooting a 66 in the final round to card a 201 (-12) total on the week.
Her 54-hole score is 12 strokes better than the previously occupied front runner in the program, which was fellow member
Lucie Charbonnier with a 213 (-3) set twice last year.
It is now the second tournament in a row that the Islanders won both the team title and the individual title.
"The team was outstanding this week," said head coach
Pat Stephens. "I am so proud of everyone and the effort given to finish off the tournament for another win. Sam played brilliantly all three rounds. Her breaking the program and tournament record, not bad for a freshman!"
Charbonnier shot her best round in the third with a 69 to jump up to third place. She has now placed in the top-three in both tournaments this year after winning the individual title at the Islander Classic.
Junior
Lucia Ramirez carded a 70-70-74 – 214 (+1) through the three rounds which was good enough for a top-10 finish. Freshman Carla Puente Fernandes finished with a 229 to place tied for 39
th while senior
Reese Drezins improved from her second round to submit a 236 on the week.
"Winning breeds winning! Two tournaments in a row shows how focused these ladies have been the past few weeks. Our goal is to continue with that mental focus and discipline, and the good scores will follow," said Stephens.
The win also adds three more points towards the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, an institutional rivalry between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV. The Islanders had already clinched this year's competition, but now tacks onto the lead 36.5 to 17.5.
The Islanders will return to the course next week when they head up to Houston Christian to compete in the Husky Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
