Shaw Named Finalist for Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – As one of the top first-year head coaches in the country, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Jim Shaw was named a finalist for the 2024 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award.

The award is presented annually to the top rookie, first-year head coach in Division I college basketball.

Shaw led the Islanders to the program's best regular season record under a first-year head coach with a 21-10 mark. He beat out his predecessor, Steve Lutz, who won 20 regular season games his first year at the helm when Shaw was on staff as an assistant. Shaw has helped guide the Islanders to three straight 20+ win seasons, before then which hadn't been done since 2016-17.

The 21 wins ranked him second among NCAA Division I rookie head coaches this season, just behind Alan Huss's 24 at High Point.

Shaw was named head coach in March 2023 after he spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach. He helped the Islanders win three conference championships in his two seasons as an assistant coach, including the 2022-23 Southland Conference regular season crown and back-to-back SLC Tournament titles. It resulted in consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

He is now coaching the program to its third straight postseason appearance and eighth ever as the Islanders compete in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, presented by BSN SPORTS, tonight at 8 p.m. CT. They will face Abilene Christian in the first game of the Lou Henson Classic, hosted by Tarleton State.

The 2024 award will be announced in Phoenix, AZ, site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship. Click here to read to full release.
