Tate Brings Home Gold, Kipngeno Wins Third Medal as Islanders Conclude SLC Indoor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track and field program closed out the 2024 SLC Indoor Championships Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex with another pair of podium finishes.

Junior Myla Tate became a conference champion after securing gold in the women's triple jump. It came along with her personal best in the event after jumping the winning mark of a 12.19m.

"The women's team has a strong championship," said first-year head coach Bryan Jackson. "The standout performance was Myla winning the triple jump, but overall, the women showed we might be small in numbers but not in spirit. I am very excited for this group, we have room to grow to be an even better team come outdoor."

It highlighted the field for the Islanders at the meet, though, other athletes saw personal high marks in their respective events. Senior Jaiyah Hodge jumped her season-best in the high jump with a 1.62m to finish fifth overall while the men saw freshman King White improve on his triple jump mark with a 13.86m. Senior Enoch Antwi also competed in the triple jump and finished ninth overall with a 14.27m jump.

Going three-for-three in finishing an event on the podium, graduate Dennis Kipngeno rounded out the meet's medal collection with silver in the 3,000m race after running a season-best 8:20.18. Yesterday, he won gold in the 5,000m race and bronze in the men's distance medley relay.

After qualifying for the 800m finals, junior Kate Brockman finished seventh with her personal record of a 2:18.72 time. In the women's 3,000m, senior Sharon Kiprop ran her season-best time with a 10:25.57 to finish ninth overall out of 30 who ran.

Overall, the women finished seventh, two places better than their last year's final standings. The men finished ninth.

"On the men's side, this was not the outcome we were capable of. We had some great highlights in the 5,000m, DMR, and 3,000m. However, as a team, we need to overall grow from this and get back to work," said Jackson.

The Islanders will now await possible qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships before looking to the outdoor season, set to open March 15 at UTSA.
