Islanders Road Trip Ends with Close Loss

RUSTON, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team ended an exhaustive season-opening road trip Monday night with a 4-1 loss to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

The Islanders (3-2) played five games in four days and still managed to get off to the program's best start in eight years thanks to an offense that scored a school-record 33 runs over the first four games. It unfortunately didn't translate in Monday's matchup with the Bulldogs (1-0) as a pair of pitchers combined to hold the Islanders to just one run on one hit.

Senior Taneice Tyson provided all the Islanders' offense with a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to help A&M-Corpus Christi avoid the shutout. It was the first home run of the season for the Islanders and the fourth for Tyson in her two years with the program.

Freshman Isabella Hune was the only other Islander to reach base, as she reached on an error just two batters into the game.

Senior Primrose Aholelei put forth yet another stellar outing, taking a shutout into the fifth inning. The Islanders' ace struck out nine in 5.2 innings, giving her 33 strikeouts in just 18 innings this season. Aholelei is now seventh on the program's all-time strikeout list, and she needs just 32 more to move into the top three.

This was the season-opener for the Bulldogs after rain washed out a weekend series at home. This also was the fifth meeting between the Islanders and Bulldogs as A&M-Corpus Christi continues to lead the all-time series 3-2.

A&M-Corpus Christi next will return home to face Stephen F. Austin in a three-game series beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at noon and a single game Sunday at noon. It will be the first of 17 home games for the Islanders in 2024.
