Soccer Finishes Regular Season with Fourth Straight Shutout, Locks Up No. 2 Seed for SLC Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ending an already historic regular season with a bang, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team posted the 2-0 shutout win Friday night at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium to cap the regular season.

The Islanders (9-4-5, 6-2-2 SLC) have cemented their best season in program history with the first-ever winning season and have extended their success by matching the most wins in a season (9). It is their fourth straight conference win, done just once previous in 2019, but it is the first time in program history that they posted four straight clean sheets.

It takes A&M-Corpus Christi's season total to eight shutouts, which ties the program record for most shutouts in a season done first in 2019. Their five home wins this season also ties the program single season record which was achieved in 2019 and 2021.

Senior Zoe Theriot pulled off the historic fourth-straight clean sheet, denying every shot she faced in the net for her own eighth shutout of the year. She leads all conference goalies with shutouts on the year.

Additionally, the win tonight over UTRGV (7-6-5, 3-3-4) and Northwestern State's loss to SFA secures the No. 2 seed for A&M-Corpus Christi, the highest the program will have ever been seeded for the Southland Conference Tournament.

To top it all off, the Islanders take this year's soccer head-to-head in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, an annual institutional rivalry series with UTRGV. A&M-Corpus Christi now leads this year's competition 13-4.

The win tonight came from goals courtesy of sophomore Ashley Wilson and senior Megan Guy. Wilson got the night started early and showed her footwork weaving through defenders to take a hard shot past the fingertips of UTRGV's goalie for the 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game.

It marks her first goal of the season and just her second career goal.

Guy then added insurance in the second half with under 20 minutes to play. Senior Morgan Westbury chased it down the right side and crossed it in time where Guy waited and although her first shot soft touched the goalie, she went back for second chance and this time chipped it to the back of the net for the 2-0 score.

It is Guy's first goal of the season and 13th of her career. Westbury also recorded her fifth assist of the season and eighth of her career, extending her team-leading point total to 15 this year.

The Islanders will now look to begin their tournament run on their home field beginning Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. against No. 7 seeded Lamar. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased here
