MCALLEN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team just barely fell to UTRGV in a 3-2 match play decision as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, on Friday at McAllen Country Club.
UTRGV now adds points to the board in the showdown standings, an annual rivalry between the two institutions. The Islanders and Vaqueros are now tied 3-3 in this year's series.
The Vaqueros took the early 1-0 lead as UTRGV's Camila Herrera defeated junior
Elsa Tornvall 4 and 2. UTRGV extended its lead to 2-0 after sophomore
Carla Puente Fernandez fell in her matchup to Cristina Galban 4 and 3.
The Islanders finally grabbed a point after graduate
Tristan Gabbard defeated Jackie Howard Gonzales 2 and 1 but the Vaqueros solidified the win after Kieli Saenz clinched it with a 2 and 1 decision over junior
Lucia Ramirez.
The Islanders added the final point as sophomore
Samantha Gibbs won 2 and 1 in the final matchup.
It wraps up fall play for the Islanders, who will get back in action with their home tournament, the Islander Classic, on Feb. 17-18 at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
